The investigation of biomimetic systems can serve two complementary goals. First, a suitably designed and configured biomimetic artefact can be used to test theories about the natural system of interest. Second, biomimetic technologies can provide useful, elegant and efficient solutions to unsolved challenges in science and engineering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Biohybrid<\/strong> systems are formed by combining at least one biological component\u2014an existing living system\u2014and at least one artificial, newly-engineered component. By passing information in one or both directions, such a system forms a new hybrid bio-artificial entity. The theme of the conference also encompasses biomimetic methods for manufacture, repair and recycling inspired by natural processes such as reproduction, digestion, morphogenesis and metamorphosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The following are some examples of \u201cLiving Machines\u201d as featured at past conferences:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Biomimetic robots and their component technologies (sensors, actuators, processors) that can intelligently interact with their environments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Active biomimetic materials and structures that self-organize and self-repair.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Nature-inspired designs and manufacturing processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Biomimetic computers\u2014neuromimetic emulations of the physiological basis for intelligent behaviour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Biohybrid brain-machine interfaces and neural implants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Artificial organs and body-parts including sensory organ-chip hybrids and intelligent prostheses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Organism-level biohybrids such as robot-animal or robot-human systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>ACTIVITIES<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The main conference will take the form of a <strong>three-day single-track oral <\/strong>and<strong> poster presentation programme<\/strong>, 18th to 20th July 2018, hosted at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnhn.fr\/fr\">Museum National D\u2019Histoire Naturelle<\/a>, Grand amphit\u00e9\u00e2tre du Museum, Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The conference programme will include <strong>five plenary lectures<\/strong> from leading international researchers in biomimetic and biohybrid systems, and the demonstrations of state-of-the-art living machine technologies<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The full conference will be preceded by up to two days of <strong>Satellite Events<\/strong> hosted at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ens.fr\/en\">\u00c9cole normale sup\u00e9rieure<\/a> in Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>SUBMITTING TO LIVING MACHINES\u00a02018<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">We invite both <strong>full papers<\/strong> and <strong>extended abstracts <\/strong>in areas related to the conference themes. see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livingmachinesconference.eu\/2018\/submission\/\">SUBMISSION<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livingmachinesconference.eu\/2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/cfp_LM2018.pdf\">cfp_LM2018<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>SPONSORSHIP<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Call for Sponsors.<\/strong> Organisations wishing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livingmachinesconference.eu\/2018\/sponsors\/\">sponsor the conference<\/a> in any way and gain the corresponding benefits by promoting themselves and their products to through conference publications, the conference web-site, and conference publicity are encouraged to contact the conference organisers to discuss the terms of sponsorship and necessary arrangements.
